St-Auban, Monday 23 June 1997
Most of the pilots of the 25th WGC have now arrived.
Today's weather is a moderate North West flow with cumulus up to 2600m ASL, ridge and wave lift together forecast.
Training tasks have been set from 327 to 390 km depending of classes, inside the southern alps.
Briefing has seen some contestation of rules :
First some gliders have been measured (by high precision device) in excess of 15 meters by up to 10 cm ! these should be accepted but with a penalty of 1 point per centimeter and per day.
Secondly, the height of contest numbers on many gliders is below the minimum 40 cm written in IGC rules for many years ; the respect of this rule has been said by a competitor to be against rule #2 (to foster friendship and cooperation among soaring pilots of all nations...)
Pilots had the choice between free flight or practice task :
Erik Borgmann did the best speed in standard with 112 km/h, Steven Raimond in 15 m 108 km/h and Reinhard Haggenmueller in Open 107 km/h.
Tomorrow Tuesday's forecast is similar with lighter winds and good thermal conditions.
I have to apologize for late transmission of this information, but technical problems (especially no data transmission possible through most telephone lines) made us very difficult to connect with our server from Saint-Auban. This is expected to improve slowly (but safely, we hope ;-) until the end of this practice week.
