Yesterday's daily bulletin
Today's weather :
Moist and unstable, with (light) Cu-Nimbs expected, but still some hope to fly today with a tiny altitude ridge forecast this afternoon.
Day has been cancelled shortly after noon.
Free distance ?
Announced at yesterday's briefing : shall we have the distance task
? According
to the latest news this task could be postponed till tomorrow, meteo
permitting, of course. A distance task represents a challenge to the scoring
team, more broken in to speed tasks on preset circuits.
Italy's beloved coach...
Who's the man behind the outstanding performances of the Italian pilots
? It's Bob Mountains, their vigorous coach, whose joking threats constantly
spur the team's motivation. At lunch yesterday, Bob nearly swallowed a
wasp that was enjoying his sandwich. The accident was fortunately avoided,
but an unusually lively argument followed, dividing the pilots as to who,
had the misfortune really occurred, would be entrusted with the delicate
task of operating a tracheotomy on their coach. Bob, at first puzzled at
his pilots' manifest eagerness to have his throat cut, was finally moved
to tears by their obvious concern to save their coach's life
THE GLIDER PILOT'S DRIVER'S LICENCE AND THE POLICE
Did anyone doubt the use of the glider pilot's licence in any way? Well? Fred Gai, Steward of the Competition, did something interesting the other day: he was stopped by the" road police. They asked him for his papers. Realising that he had forgotten his driving licence he did not hesitate and showed his glider pilot's licence. "Eh bien... Monsieur, ça va, vous pouvez poursuivre votre route" (little hestitation, and "well Sir, that's all right, you may continue"). Well?
ATTENTION , SECURITY !
We now continue our survey of those " without rank ", those whose only
role is to look after the well-being and the tranquillity of the teams,
and of their colleagues in the organization hooked on more gratifying tasks
(i.e. to understand all that relates to the flights).
Security is highly linked to logisitics, which we talked about in yesterday's
Mondial Visions. We have already had the opportunity to talk about security
in relation to the regrettable burglary which caught the guards out, during
training week.
In their defense, it must be said that they are glider pilots or volunteers,
and far from being necessarily professionals of surveillance. But they
are conscious of the importance of their mission. They have amply learnt
the lesson from the theft and, without revealing the actual substance of
their counter, we can say that the mechanics of it are set : reinforced
manpower, various alarms and traps, more frequent rounds and direct
communication with the police of Châteaux-Arnoux-Saint-Auban. When
the night comes, the security group, oblivious of the pleasures of the
parties at the Aniel hangar, sit up all night watching over people's quality
of sleep, and the integrity of their possessions...
We mention at this stage of our story that the security on the airfield,
on the responsibility of Michel Mioche and François Lagarde, is
not to be confused with " all the rest ", even if they share the same pink
badge. The former are in charge of controlling the enthusiasm of the public
surrounding the gliders and of the towplanes on the grid, in connexion
with the GIR (Groupe d'Intervention Rapide). They have at least the satisfaction
to be near the best pilot in the world. The other ones are rather watchmen,
their competence varying from surveillance of various premises and
camping, to their operation.
Example : Michel Bellegueil, expert in electrical-technical matters,
takes care of the maintenance of the equipments in the briefing hall (
computer, viewgraph , wiring for sound,
as well as their protection, not to mention tidying and cleaning up.
The same persons secure
the control points, regulating car traffic on the site, a delicate
problem, especially at take-offs
and arrivals. As such they had to manage the air meetings of
June 29th (opening meeting) and
of July 5th and 6th (animation weekend), being doubly concerned
with helping the pilots and
directing the public, unaware of aeronautical matters.
The manager of this team is Antoine Caglioni, retired fire brigade
commander, who is therefore more or less acting as the policeman
on the airfield ! Until now,he and his boys ( it is not really a set group,
often enough he gets spontaneous help, such as offered by Hélène
Cazalet, responsible for the press office, or Jean-Claude Walz, also towpilot)
succeeded in
keeping their bet : to lose their temper with nobody...
DR MANFRED REINHARDT, A RESEARCH MAN AND.GLIDER PILOT
Dr Manfred Reinhardt, a glider pilot since he was young, and now the very active President of OSTIV, professionally has researched the atmosphere all his life. We earlier described how his Falcon 20 aircraft nearly got inverted when following a Boeing 747 to analyse the generation of contails, but this story begins much earlier.
Manfred already was a glider pilot before the war. He joined the Gliding Section of the Universitiy of Stuttgart in 1951. There he flew the 'Hol's der Teufel' and the 12 m span Hutter H 17, which he liked particularly. It flew like a buzzard, he says. He could have followed his father's footsteps in salt mining, but he decided that there was more for him high over the ground.
Manfred joined Professor Georgii in 1955. It was Prof Georgii who asked Manfred to take the responsibility of a research project with a brand new Kranich III, with which he and his Academic Pilots Group visited St Auban in 1956. This was to be the start of his practical research activities into the properties of the atmosphere. The idea was that this project would take only three months, but it proved to become the work of his life.
In the Institute of Physics of the Atmosphere of the DFVLR, later DLR,
the German Reseach Institute for Aviation and Space Research in Oberpfaffenhofen,
Germany, he used three ASK-16 motor gliders, because exhaust gases of motor
aircraft would influence his very precise measurements, but also a Dornier
27 ('the altitude-Do'), a Dornier 228, a Beechcraft Queen Air and later
even a Falcon 20 to measure of the composition of the atmosphere, first
in the lower 'boundary' layers, later in the middle layers and up to the
tropopause very precisely. Most of his measurements were made in the European
Alpine area, covering parts of Austria, France and Switzerland.
Also POLIDRAD, was used, a doppler-polarisation radar, which is able
to distinguish the various particle types which exist in clouds.
Manfred flew about 25 glider types. He collected about 1200 motor flying hours and 500 gliding hours. He also was organiser of competitons and crew member. He was elected First Vice- president of OSTIV in 1976 in Räyskälä and President in 1978 in Chateauroux.
Manfred left the DLR in 1992, but that does not mean his has stopped
being active in aviation and OSTIV. He still combines his love for flight
with the environment, now for a German environmental group related with
the river Ammer, for instance making pictures from a motor glider of the
way reed grows at the borders of some lakes like the Ammer and Starnberger
lakes in Southern Germany. One of their projects is a comparison of the
environmental properties of a particular region before and after the construction
of a motorway in it.
Socially Manfred makes himself available as a driver for elderly or
sick people who need transport.
One of his ideals is the creation of a real gliding field in Neubiberg
near München, using solar energy only for winching or propulsion.
Manfred thinks that when the efficiency of the solar panels and propulsion
motors increases a bit more, an environment-friendly and efficient possibility
to practice the sport of gliding will emerge, giving new possibiliies to
attract young people.
Manfred thinks that OSTIV in the future will be able to do useful work
in thermal research by combining all the modern electronic means like GPS
and temperature and humidity sensors. Also the stall warning problem could
thus be solved.
Manfred is now stepping down as President of OSTIV, but there are lot
of things for him left to do. Good luck in the future, Manfred!

OSTIV Congress - Day 4 (2)
telles qu'observation, images radar, radiosondages, images satellite, cartes
de prévisions, etc., peuvent être sélectionnées
sur un écran, dans différentes fenêtres. Vraiment impressionnant
