Team Canada

The flying part of our team is quite small - we have one standard class pilot, but rumours were being spread that we had ten crew members to support him. That isn't quite true.

Our pilot is Dominique Bonniere - he was actually born here and spent part of his childhood in southern France. However, he moved to Canada when he was thirteen. (When it is 30 below in winter he must wonder why he ever left!) He took up gliding in the armed forces. The only things to do on the base were to drink beer, go hunting, or to glide. He chose the gliding, and has been flying for about 15 years. The great thing is that if he has to land out here, he doesn't have to point to the sentence on the top of the landout sheet which says "This pilot doesn't speak French".

The team captain is Christine Futter, who has been flying longer than Dominique, but in a much less adventurous way. Her favourite glider is the club's Skylark 4, which is very easy to fly and which will even find its own thermals. Too bad it may not make it to the next one.

As for our crew, George 'Moose' Szukala (he's the big one) is here from a NATO base in Germany for the duration of the contest. Ken and Sandra Brewin have to return to Canada at the weekend - Ken to go back to work as an Air Canada pilot and Sandra to look after the deer that they raise on their farm. The new crop of fawns started to arrive just before they left. Hal Werneburg and his partner Renate Hull were here on vacation and dropped in to give moral support. So we don't really have ten people to support one pilot. We just do as much as ten people would.
